Looks like the Yes On 26 folks have flip-flopped their statements on birth control yet again:
Reason: We are opposed to those birth control methods which act as abortifacients. These could include forms of the pill which act to prevent implantation of the newly formed human into the lining of the womb; forms of the IUD, which can act the same; and prostaglandin suppository drugs, which act to cause delivery of whatever size baby the uterus contains.

This is actually the third answer to this question they’ve given. Their FAQ originally contained the above statement, which was changed in late September to a statement that Initiative 26 “will not ban the use of hormonal contraceptives, including most forms of the Pill”. Now they’re back to stating that Initiative 26 will prohibit forms of the pill which prevent implantation.
Guess what? ALL forms of hormonal birth control can potentially work to prevent implantation.
Additionally, Yes On 26 is very clear that IUDs would no longer be available to Mississippi women. If you’re a woman who wants the reliability of an IUD for long-term birth control, or who uses Mirena to treat menstrual issues such as endometriosis or menorrhagia, you will no longer have that option.
It’s even possible that women with IUDs already in place could be forced to have them removed. After all, if IUDs should be unavailable because they act as abortifacients, how is it acceptable for women to keep using them for the next five or ten years? If an IUD is tantamount to murder, surely it can’t be OK to continue engaging in murder until the IUD expires?
Personhood advocates may tell you that “Initiative 26 won’t ban birth control”, but they contradict themselves in their own words. If they can’t even make up their own minds about birth control, how can they promise you that the Legislature will protect your right to medical care?

One challenge to this farce of an amendment is that the state cannot outlaw any medication that the FDA and the federal governemnt has approved. I hope people read what this “law” is really about and not just think it is about abortion. According to science an organism which includes life of any kind has to be able to live and reproduce on its own. A fertilized egg of an mamal, and humans in this case are considered mamals, cannot live on its own until fully formed and taken out the uterus at the end of gestation. Therefore life cannot begin until the fetus is able to survive on its own.
